This argument usually generates more heat than insight. Both platforms are excellent, and most people would be perfectly happy on either. The useful question is not which is better, but which suits how you actually use a phone.
Cost over time, not price on day one
An iPhone costs significantly more upfront. Where the maths gets interesting is what happens after three years.
iPhones hold resale value noticeably better in India, and receive software updates for longer — often five to six years. That means a three-year-old iPhone is still current, secure and worth selling.
Android varies enormously. Premium Samsung and Google devices now promise long update windows comparable to Apple. Budget Android phones often get two OS updates at most, and resale value drops steeply.
So the honest framing is: if you upgrade every two years and buy budget Android, Android is far cheaper. If you keep a phone four or five years, the gap narrows considerably once resale is counted.
Where Android clearly wins
- Choice at every price. Android covers ₹8,000 to ₹1.5 lakh. Apple starts far higher.
- Value for specification. At any given price under about ₹50,000, Android gives you more — bigger battery, faster charging, more RAM, higher refresh rate.
- Charging speed. Android phones charge dramatically faster. This is a real daily quality-of-life difference.
- Customisation and file management. More control over how the phone looks and works, and far simpler file transfers.
- Repairs. Cheaper and more widely available, including in smaller towns.
Where iPhone clearly wins
- Long-term software support and consistent performance over years.
- Resale value — substantially better.
- Video recording — still the reference point at the top end.
- Privacy defaults and less pre-installed bloatware.
- Ecosystem — if you own AirPods, an iPad or a Mac, the integration is genuinely seamless.
India-specific considerations
Service access. Apple's authorised service network is concentrated in larger cities. If you live in a Tier-2 or Tier-3 town, Android repairs are far more convenient and cheaper. This matters more than most comparisons acknowledge.
Out-of-warranty repair cost. An iPhone screen replacement can cost a significant fraction of a mid-range Android phone. Factor this in.
Dual SIM. Widely available on both now, but check the specific model and whether it uses eSIM, which not all Indian operators handle equally smoothly.
Who should choose what
Choose Android if: your budget is under ₹40,000, you want maximum specification per rupee, you value fast charging and customisation, you live away from a metro, or you like changing phones often.
Choose iPhone if: you keep phones four or more years, you already own Apple devices, you shoot a lot of video, or you value long update support and strong resale.
The thing that actually matters
Switching platforms costs you time — moving data, rebuying apps, relearning habits. If you are content where you are, the other side is not so much better that switching is worth the friction.
Buy the best phone you can afford on the platform you already use, unless you have a specific reason to move. That single sentence resolves this debate for most people.
