Refresh rate is now advertised on almost every phone, often more prominently than the processor. Here is what it means and whether it should sway your purchase.
What the number means
Refresh rate is how many times per second the screen redraws. More updates make motion appear smoother — scrolling stays legible, animations feel fluid, the interface feels more responsive.
What you will actually notice
The jump from 60Hz to 90Hz is obvious to most people. The jump from 90Hz to 120Hz is subtler and many cannot reliably tell them apart. Above 120Hz, returns diminish sharply outside competitive gaming. One warning: after a few weeks on a high refresh rate screen, 60Hz looks choppy — that is adaptation, not a defect, but it makes going back unpleasant.
Where it does and does not apply
Refresh rate affects the interface — scrolling, animations, menus — which is where you spend most of your time. It does not improve video: films are typically 24fps and most streaming is 30fps, and a fast screen cannot add frames that were never recorded. For gaming it only helps if the game itself runs at a high frame rate.
The battery cost
Refreshing twice as often uses more power. This is why adaptive refresh rate matters more than the peak number — a good adaptive display drops to 60Hz for static content and rises to 120Hz when you scroll, giving smoothness without constant drain. Check whether a phone has genuine adaptive switching or just a manual toggle.
What matters more than refresh rate
- Peak brightness — whether you can read the screen in Indian sunlight.
- Panel type — AMOLED versus LCD affects contrast and colour more visibly.
- Resolution — Full HD minimum for sharpness.
A bright 90Hz AMOLED beats a dim 120Hz LCD in everyday use, comfortably.
The recommendation
Aim for at least 90Hz — the improvement over 60Hz is real. Treat 120Hz as a bonus, prioritise adaptive switching, and be wary of a phone selling 144Hz on a dim, low-resolution panel: that is a number, not a better screen.
