How to Check the Warranty Status of Your Phone or Laptop

Most people discover their warranty status only when something breaks. Checking at purchase takes two minutes and occasionally reveals a problem you can still fix.

Find your device identifier

  • Phone: dial star-hash-06-hash for the IMEI, or find it in Settings, About phone.
  • Laptop: the serial number is usually on a sticker underneath, or in system information.

Note this number somewhere separate — you need it for a warranty claim and to report a theft.

Check with the manufacturer

Most major brands provide a warranty check on their official support site — enter the IMEI or serial and it shows coverage status and expiry. Search for your brand plus warranty check and use the official domain; avoid third-party sites offering to check warranty, as they are collecting device data.

The problem worth catching early

Warranty usually begins from first activation or the manufacturer's shipping date, not necessarily your purchase date. If a device sat in a warehouse for months, or was previously activated and returned, your effective warranty may be shorter than expected. Check within the return window — if the activation date predates your purchase significantly, raise it with the seller while you can still return it.

Keep the right documents

For a warranty claim in India you will generally need the GST invoice in your name, the device with its identifier intact, and sometimes the original packaging. Photograph the invoice and store it in cloud storage on the day you buy — paper invoices fade and get lost, and a service centre asking for proof of purchase two years later is common.

What warranty typically does not cover

  • Physical damage — drops, cracks, bends.
  • Liquid damage, even on water-resistant devices.
  • Unauthorised repairs, which usually void coverage.
  • Normal wear, including gradual battery capacity loss.

If your claim is refused

Ask for the reason in writing. If you believe it is unjustified, escalate through the brand's grievance process, keeping records of every interaction. Indian consumer law provides remedies for defective goods, and keeping your invoice, service job sheets and written communication makes any such process much easier.

Before the warranty expires

If something has been intermittently faulty, get it looked at before expiry rather than hoping it resolves. Intermittent faults rarely fix themselves, and a documented service visit while under warranty helps if the problem recurs later.
