How to Improve Weak Mobile Signal at Home

Weak indoor signal is usually caused by building materials blocking the signal, not by network failure. Several fixes cost nothing.

Start here: enable Wi-Fi calling

This is the most effective fix and the most overlooked. Wi-Fi calling routes calls over your home broadband instead of the mobile network, giving full call quality with no bars showing. Find it under Settings, Network and internet, your SIM, Wi-Fi calling — or search your settings for it. All major Indian operators support it and it is generally free. If you have good broadband and poor signal, this solves the problem entirely.

Check that VoLTE is on

VoLTE carries calls over 4G rather than dropping to older networks. It gives better quality and connects faster. If it is off, your phone falls back to older networks for calls, which often have worse indoor coverage.

Understand where the signal goes

Signal is blocked by concrete, metal and some coated glass. In practice, it is usually strongest near windows and on upper floors, and worst in basements and inner rooms. Walk around watching the indicator — there is often a reliable spot you had not noticed.

Try switching network mode

If 5G is patchy where you live, the phone may keep switching between 5G and 4G, dropping calls and draining battery. Setting the preferred network to 4G/LTE often produces a more stable indoor connection. You lose peak speed and gain reliability, which is usually the better trade at home.

Other quick things

  • Toggle airplane mode on and off to force reconnection to the best cell.
  • Restart the phone — genuinely helps when it has latched onto a distant tower.
  • Remove a thick metal case, which can measurably reduce reception.
  • Reseat or replace an old SIM; worn contacts cause problems.

About signal boosters

Consumer signal repeaters are widely advertised, but using an unauthorised repeater is not permitted in India — a poorly configured one interferes with the network for everyone nearby, including emergency services. If your building genuinely has no coverage, contact your operator, who can register a complaint and deploy authorised in-building solutions.

If nothing helps

Borrow a friend's SIM on another network and test indoors. If a different operator works well, the issue is your operator's coverage in your area — and number portability makes switching straightforward. Coverage in a specific building varies a lot between operators.
