Spam calls and SMS are a daily tax on every Indian phone — loan offers, fake "KYC" warnings, insurance pitches, and recorded promo calls. You can't block all of it, but you can cut it down dramatically with a few free steps. Here's what actually works, in order of effort.
Step 1: Register for TRAI DND (free, official)
TRAI's Do Not Disturb registry tells telemarketers to stop. The easiest way is the official DND options offered by your operator:
- SMS method: Send START 0 to 1909 to block all commercial messages and calls. You'll get a confirmation. To block only specific categories (banking, real estate, etc.), send START followed by the category code.
- App method: Use the TRAI DND app or your operator's app (MyJio, Airtel Thanks, Vi) to register and to report spam you still receive. Reporting matters — it's how genuinely illegal spammers get penalised.
DND stops registered telemarketers. It won't stop fraudsters using personal numbers, which is where the next steps come in.
Step 2: Turn on your phone's built-in spam filter
Both major call apps now flag spam automatically:
- Google Phone app (most Android phones): Open Phone → tap the three dots → Settings → Caller ID & spam → turn on "See caller and spam ID" and "Filter spam calls." Suspected spam then gets silenced or labelled.
- Truecaller-style ID is built into many phones now, but if yours doesn't have it, the Google Phone app above is the cleanest free option and doesn't sell your contacts.
Step 3: Use "Silence unknown callers" for serious peace
If spam is overwhelming, both Android and iPhone let you silence every call from numbers not in your contacts. Calls still appear in your recents and voicemail, so you don't miss anything important — they just don't ring.
- Android (Google Phone): Settings → Spam and Call Screen → Silence unknown callers (wording varies by phone).
- iPhone: Settings → Phone → Silence Unknown Callers.
This is the single most effective setting if you mostly receive calls from people you know.
Step 4: Block and report SMS spam
For text spam, long-press the message → Block & report spam. On Android's Messages app this both blocks the sender and feeds Google's spam detection. Never tap links in "KYC update," "electricity bill," or "parcel pending" texts — these are the most common scams in India right now, and the link is the trap.
Step 5: Stop giving your number away
Most spam starts because your number leaked. Reduce future spam by skipping the "enter your number" prompts at retail billing counters when you can, and avoid entering it into random "win a prize" or app sign-up forms.
What about Truecaller and third-party blockers?
They work, but they typically upload your contact list and show ads. If you're comfortable with that trade, fine. If not, the Google Phone app filter + Silence Unknown Callers + TRAI DND combination above gives you most of the benefit without handing over your address book.
No method ends spam completely — but stacking these four steps takes it from dozens a day to a handful.
