How to Transfer Data From an Old Phone to a New One

Modern phones make transfers largely automatic. But a few important things fall outside the automatic process, and those are exactly what people lose.

Before you start: prepare the old phone

1. Update it — transfer tools work better on current software.
2. Back up WhatsApp manually — Settings, Chats, Chat backup, Back Up Now.
3. Confirm photos are synced to your cloud account and the sync shows complete.
4. Charge both phones above 50 percent.
5. Set aside time — a full transfer can take an hour or more.

Android to Android

Start the new phone and follow the setup wizard. When offered, choose to copy data from another device. A cable is faster and more reliable than wireless. This moves apps, accounts, contacts, messages, call history, settings and usually photos. If both phones are the same brand, the manufacturer's own transfer tool often moves even more, including home screen layout.

iPhone to iPhone

Bring the phones near each other during setup and use the guided transfer. On recent software you can move data directly device to device, including most app data. Alternatively restore from a recent iCloud backup.

Android to iPhone, or iPhone to Android

This is where losses happen. Migration apps move contacts, messages, photos and some app data, but note:

• Paid apps do not carry across platforms — you buy them again.
• App data for many apps does not transfer, even where the app exists on both.
• WhatsApp chat history has an official transfer process, but it must be done during initial setup and has specific requirements. Research it for your direction before you begin.

The gap that causes the worst problems

Two-factor authentication apps usually do not transfer automatically. If you reset the old phone before moving them, you can be locked out of accounts entirely.

Before transferring, enable your authenticator's cloud sync if it has one, or re-register each account on the new phone while the old one still works, and keep the backup codes each service gave you. Do this first — it is the one step that is genuinely hard to undo.

After the transfer

1. Verify photos, contacts and WhatsApp on the new phone before touching the old one.
2. Check banking and UPI apps work and receive OTPs.
3. Confirm your authenticator codes work by logging into one account.
4. Keep the old phone for at least a week before wiping it. Something is always missed.

Only once everything is confirmed should you sign out of your accounts and factory reset the old device.
