You bought a 10,000mAh power bank and your 5,000mAh phone only charged one and a half times. You were not cheated. The physics just does not work the way the label suggests.
Here is what the numbers mean and how to buy the right one.
Why you never get the full capacity
Power bank cells run at about 3.7V. Charging over USB happens at 5V. Converting between them loses energy as heat, and more is lost in the cable and your phone's own charging circuit.
Realistically you get roughly 60-70% of the labelled capacity delivered into your phone. So a 10,000mAh bank gives you around 6,000-7,000mAh of usable charge. Against a 5,000mAh phone battery, that is a little over one full charge — exactly what you experienced.
This is normal and applies to every brand. Any bank claiming near-100% efficiency is lying.
Choosing capacity
- 5,000mAh: pocketable, roughly half a phone charge. Good as emergency backup.
- 10,000mAh: the sweet spot for most people. About one full charge, still light enough to carry daily.
- 20,000mAh: two to three charges, or enough for a weekend trip. Noticeably heavy.
- Above 20,000mAh: useful for laptops or group travel, but check airline rules — most carriers cap what you can carry in cabin baggage.
Watts matter more than mAh
Capacity decides how much. Wattage decides how fast. This is the spec most people ignore and then regret.
A cheap 10,000mAh bank with a 10W output will take hours to fill your phone. A bank supporting 18W, 30W or higher with Power Delivery (PD) can push your phone to a usable level in a fraction of the time.
Match this to your phone. If your phone supports 33W fast charging, an 18W power bank will charge it, just slower than its wall adapter. There is no harm — the devices negotiate a safe speed — but do not expect wall-charger speeds from a budget bank.
Look for USB-C Power Delivery
USB-C PD is the universal standard. A PD power bank will fast-charge almost any modern phone, plus tablets and many laptops. Proprietary fast-charging standards work brilliantly with their own brand and fall back to slow speeds with everything else.
Also check whether the USB-C port supports input and output. If it is output-only, you will be stuck recharging the bank itself through an old micro-USB port, which is painfully slow.
Safety is not optional
A power bank is a dense lithium battery you carry against your body and leave charging overnight. This is the one accessory where buying the cheapest unknown brand is a genuinely bad idea.
Look for BIS certification (mandatory in India), a named brand with service support, and basic protections — overcharge, over-discharge, short circuit and temperature protection. Reject anything that gets alarmingly hot, swells, or makes noise.
Quick buying checklist
- 10,000mAh for daily carry, 20,000mAh for travel.
- USB-C PD, at least 18W, with input and output on the same port.
- BIS certified, known brand, real warranty.
- Expect about 65% of the labelled capacity in practice.
- Skip solar power banks — the panel is decorative, not functional.
Buy once, buy safe, and stop worrying about the headline number on the box.
