Everyone has battery advice, and most of it is outdated — built for old nickel batteries, not the lithium-ion cells in every modern phone. Here's what actually matters for keeping your battery healthy, and what you can safely stop worrying about.
Myth: You should drain to 0% before recharging
False. This was true for old battery chemistry decades ago. Modern lithium-ion batteries are the opposite — they're stressed by deep drains. Letting your phone hit 0% regularly wears the battery faster, not slower. Don't deliberately run it flat.
Fact: Staying in the 20–80% range extends lifespan
The single most useful habit. Lithium-ion batteries age fastest when sitting at very high (100%) or very low (0%) charge. Keeping it roughly between 20% and 80% noticeably slows the wear. You don't need to be obsessive — just stop treating a full 0-to-100 cycle as the goal.
Myth: Charging overnight destroys your battery
Mostly false, with a nuance. Modern phones stop drawing current once they hit 100%, so the phone isn't "overcharging" all night. The real issue is that sitting at 100% for hours adds a little stress. That's why most phones now include "Optimised Charging" — they charge to 80%, pause, and finish to 100% just before your alarm. Turn this on (Settings → Battery) and overnight charging is fine.
Fact: Heat is the real battery-killer
If you remember one thing: heat ages batteries more than anything else. Charging while gaming, leaving the phone on a car dashboard in the sun, or using a cheap fast charger that runs hot all do real damage over time. Take the case off during heavy charging if the phone gets warm, and never charge it under your pillow.
Myth: You must use only the original charger
Half true. You don't need the exact original charger, but you do need a good quality one that matches your phone's charging standard. A reputable charger with the right wattage and protocol is fine. The danger is ultra-cheap, uncertified chargers that don't regulate voltage properly — those can run hot and degrade the battery (and occasionally are a safety risk).
Fact: Fast charging is fine — within reason
The fast charging built into modern phones is designed to be safe; manufacturers manage the heat and taper the speed as the battery fills. It does generate more heat than slow charging, so over years it has a slightly larger effect — but for normal use, the convenience is worth it. If you want to baby a phone you'll keep for four years, slow-charge it overnight with optimised charging on.
The simple routine
You don't need apps or rituals. Just:
- Keep it roughly between 20–80% when convenient.
- Turn on Optimised/Adaptive Charging.
- Avoid heat — especially charging while gaming.
- Use a decent, certified charger.
Do that and your battery will comfortably outlast the point where you're buying a new phone anyway. Battery "health" apps that promise to "repair" your battery, by the way, can't — battery wear is physical and irreversible. Save your money.
