USB-C was supposed to end cable confusion. One connector for everything. Instead we got one shape for everything, hiding enormous differences in what each cable can actually do.
This is why your phone charges quickly with one cable and crawls with another that looks identical, and why the cable you bought to move files runs at a fraction of the speed you expected.
First, a question worth clearing up: is Type-C the same as USB-C?
Yes. Identical. "USB Type-C" is the official name, "USB-C" is the shortened version everyone actually uses, and "Type-C" is the same thing with the USB dropped. Shops in India use all three interchangeably and none of them is wrong.
What matters is that the name only describes the shape of the plug. It tells you the cable will fit your phone. It tells you nothing whatsoever about how fast it will charge or how quickly it moves data.
That gap is the entire problem.
The connector is not the standard
Inside two identical-looking USB-C cables, four things can differ independently — and this is the part almost everyone gets wrong: they do not come as a package.
- How much power it can carry. From 60W at the low end up to 240W.
- How fast it moves data. From 480Mbps up to 80Gbps — a difference of more than 150 times.
- Whether it carries video at all. Many cables cannot drive a monitor, no matter what you plug them into.
- Whether it has an e-marker chip. More on this below; it is the single most useful thing to understand.
A cable can be excellent at one of these and useless at another. The most striking example: Apple's cable for the iPhone 15 Pro is certified for 240W of power, and carries data at USB 2.0 speed — 480Mbps. It is simultaneously one of the most capable charging cables you can buy and one of the slowest data cables in your drawer.
So when a cable's packaging shouts "240W", it has told you precisely nothing about how fast it will transfer your photos.
The e-marker chip, and why cheap cables cap out
Inside better USB-C cables is a tiny chip called an e-marker. When you plug in, your charger interrogates this chip and the cable declares what it can handle: maximum current, maximum voltage, maximum data rate, and whether it is a passive or active cable.
Here is the rule that explains most slow charging:
A cable with no e-marker is limited to 3 amps at 20 volts — 60 watts — and USB 2.0 data speed. This is not a manufacturing shortcut. The specification forbids drawing higher current through an unmarked cable, because the charger has no way to confirm the cable can carry it safely.
Any cable that claims more than 60W, or any data speed above USB 2.0, must have an e-marker. If it claims those things and does not have one, it is lying, and the charger will refuse to cooperate anyway.
This is why a ₹120 cable from a roadside stall will never charge your phone at its rated speed, however good your charger is. There is no chip in it to say it can.
Why your fast charger is not charging fast
When an Indian phone advertises 67W or 80W or 120W charging and you are not getting it, run through these in order.
The cable is the wrong one. This is the usual answer. If you have replaced the one that came in the box with a generic cable, you have almost certainly dropped to 60W or lower.
Your phone uses proprietary fast charging. This matters more in India than almost anywhere else, because Realme, OPPO, OnePlus, iQOO and Xiaomi all sell phones using their own charging systems — SuperVOOC, Warp, HyperCharge and the rest. These push very high current at lower voltage, which is outside what standard USB Power Delivery does. They generally require both the bundled charger and the bundled cable. Substitute either and the phone quietly falls back to a slower standard charge, with no error message telling you why.
If you own one of these phones, the practical advice is blunt: keep the cable that came in the box, and use it for charging. Buy a second cable for everything else.
The charger is the limit, not the cable. A 240W cable with an 18W charger gives you 18W.
The cable is too long. Resistance rises with length. Two-metre and three-metre cables are convenient but often lose you real charging speed unless well made.

Do different USB-C cables charge faster? Yes — up to a point
Swapping to a better cable helps only if the cable was the bottleneck. Charging speed is set by the weakest of three things: the charger, the cable, and what the phone will accept.
A ₹2,000 240W cable will not make a 33W phone charge faster. But a 60W-limited cable absolutely will slow down a phone capable of 80W. Diagnose before you spend.

Read that table twice. The second and third rows are where people lose money — buying an expensive high-wattage cable expecting it to be fast at everything, and getting 480Mbps.
How to buy the right cable in India
Decide what the cable is for first. Charging and data are separate purchases. There is no shame in owning two cables; it is cheaper than one that does both badly.
For charging your phone: if it uses proprietary fast charging, buy the manufacturer's own cable. Otherwise a 60W cable is genuinely enough — very few phones draw more than that over standard USB PD.
For a laptop: you need 100W, which means a 5A e-marked cable. Check the wattage is printed on the cable or its packaging.
For moving files: ignore the wattage entirely and look for a data speed — 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 40Gbps. If the listing does not state one, assume 480Mbps, because it almost certainly is. This matters if you regularly move video off your phone; see transferring data between phones for when it is worth it.
Be wary of Indian marketplace listings. "Fast charging cable" and "3.0A turbo" are marketing phrases with no defined meaning. A real specification looks like "100W, 5A, USB 2.0" — actual numbers, stated separately for power and data. If a listing gives you one number and a lot of adjectives, it is hiding something.
Buy braided, and buy the length you need. Most cables fail at the neck where the cable meets the connector. Braided sleeving is the cheapest real durability upgrade. And a 1m cable will outperform a 2m one of the same quality.
