USB-C Explained: Why All Your Cables Are Not the Same

USB-C was supposed to end cable confusion. One connector for everything. Instead we got one shape for everything, hiding enormous differences in what each cable can actually do.

This is why your phone charges quickly with one cable and slowly with another that looks identical.

The connector is not the standard

USB-C describes only the physical plug — the small, reversible oval. It says nothing about how much power the cable carries or how fast it moves data.

Two cables that look the same can differ by a factor of ten in charging speed and by far more in data transfer. There is no way to tell by looking.

Charging: the power rating

Every USB-C cable supports at least 3A (roughly 60W). That covers phone charging comfortably.

Above that, the cable needs an E-marker chip to safely negotiate higher current — up to 5A (100W) or, with newer specifications, up to 240W. Cables without this chip will still work, but they cap the power, which is why a laptop may charge slowly or not at all on the wrong cable.

If your fast charging suddenly seems slow, the cable is the first thing to check, not the charger.

Data: the biggest hidden difference

Here is where the gap is dramatic. Many bundled cables, especially the ones included with phones, are USB 2.0 for data — capped at 480Mbps. That is fine for charging and utterly painful for transferring video files.

Other USB-C cables support far faster standards, reaching 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps or more. A cable that charges your phone perfectly may take twenty minutes to move a file that a proper data cable moves in one.

If you regularly transfer large files or connect an external SSD, buy a cable explicitly rated for data speed. The packaging must state it — assume USB 2.0 if it does not.

Video output: not automatic

Connecting your phone or laptop to a monitor over USB-C requires the cable to support DisplayPort Alternate Mode. Many charging cables do not. This is why a perfectly good cable sometimes produces no picture at all.

Thunderbolt is different again

Thunderbolt 3, 4 and 5 use the USB-C connector but are a distinct, higher-capability standard, marked with a small lightning bolt. They handle very high data rates and multiple displays. Thunderbolt cables work as regular USB-C cables, but not the reverse.

How to buy sensibly

  1. Buy for the job. A cheap charging cable is fine for a bedside charger. Do not use it for file transfers or a monitor.
  2. Check the stated specs. A good cable lists wattage and data speed. Silence usually means the bare minimum.
  3. Prefer known brands. A badly made power cable is a genuine safety risk, not just an inconvenience.
  4. Label your cables. Once you own several, a small sticker saving you from testing three cables is worth the effort.

The practical takeaway

Keep one high-quality cable rated for high wattage and fast data for anything serious, and use the cheap bundled ones for simple overnight charging.

When something charges slowly, transfers slowly, or refuses to output video, suspect the cable first. It is the most common and least obvious culprit.
